The SMITH store in Narita airport (T1) was the start of my Delfonics experience where I got a red cardholder (similar here). (I promise to post a review soon.) I went to Madewell to make a return and was very happy to see that they’ve restocked their Delfonics pouch collection. Especially this gingham one that I thought was discontinued.

I’m tempted to go through a third party shopping service in Japan to shop for me because it’s hard to find the same Quitterie selection and prices in the US. If you’re easy to please, you can find Delfonics in the US at Madewell, Urban Outfitters, and Amazon.

Quick reviews and current sales:

  • Anthropologie cardholders: Check your e-mail. 20% off this weekend! And if you’re not a cardholder, what are you waiting for? It’s free and you can still signup for the discount.
  • Madewell. 20% to 30% off almost everything through Monday.
    • Wraparound hinge bracelet vs. catch hinge bracelet (pictured above). Both are solid, well made, and have a classy shimmery sheen. I do not have a super small wrist, but it is on the smaller spectrum and the bracelets fit perfectly. I prefer the look of the wraparound bracelet.

A coworker had a new black and white scarf on during a staff meeting, which I admired from afar. I immediately knew it was Madewell and that it was going on my wishlist! The Cityguide Scarf reminds me of my Tokyo storyteller scarf, but set in NYC with food highlights and longer length. I don’t need much convincing with ‘taco taco taco’ and ‘yum ramen’.

This goes well with my Madewell Amex offer

I didn’t expect to find Canvas (the home store) items at Madewell, but then, J.Crew and Madewell have been beefing up their home sections. I came across their Dauville collection last year – it’s delightful for those who fancy gold or silver! I have a small bowl and pebble dish which I use to hold baubles or lip products on the bathroom counter.

Madewell has three items on sale: the gold bud vase, gold small pebble dish, and silver medium pebble dish. All are under $16 and ship free with code SALEONSALE through Monday night. You can find more Dauville at Bloomies (which is also running a promotion).

If you fancy more Madewell and have an Amex, get another $20 statement credit for a purchase over $125 through the end of March. This does work on giftcards!

I purchased and returned these very similar black leather duffle bags: the Madewell et sézane® nola satchel (left, limited edition and on final sale for $209.99) and Clare Vivier Duffle Grand (right, 50% off for $294.20). I’ve been looking for a satchel to tote around that is large enough for travel (not as the sole bag) and occasional everyday use. They are both very similar in shape, size (give and take an inch variance in each dimension despite the photos) and in color, but that’s about it.

  • Leather – Madewell’s is much thicker and substantial. CV’s is too thin and that includes the leather strap. The zipper puckers a little when it’s zipped up. I doubt the strap would hold with heavy use. For a bag like this, I’m looking for durability.
  • Shoulder strap – Madewell’s can be adjusted. CV’s is fixed and I think it feels a bit short.
  • Top handle drop – Madewell’s is an inch longer, which means it can fit under your shoulder.
  • Price – Retail of $299.99 vs $658.

My pick? Madewell. I’d returned the Madewell because I didn’t want to pay retail. Now, Madewell really needs to a % off sale code!

The holidays is a tempting time to shop as one is inundated by sales and trying to cross off names on the shopping list, but constantly finding things to buy for oneself. I prefer to gift when I’m in the mood and have something perfect to give, rather than gifting for the sake of gifting. That’s just the way I was brought up with a non-traditional family in the sense of not abiding with American giftgiving customs. And that’s how my mom happened to get a bread machine for Christmas. (If you’re not a big Gilt shopper, make sure to check your e-mail for random additional 50% off codes.)

But, for the folks who must have to cross names off a list, here is a start for the females in your life. The J.Crew corporation is on a discount rampage and has 40% off select items at Madewell for tonight only. I’m trying to be good because I have a big trip coming up in a few weeks =D.

(Left to right, top to bottom)

I have updated this post with CyberMonday deals.

I ventured to the stores on Sunday to make some mass returns. I love the patch of Fifth Avenue between 16th and 19th St — Anthropologie, Madewell, J.Crew, Zara, Joe Fresh, and Gap. Old Navy’s also a block away. One observation — Anthropologie and Madewell smell really bad. Anthropologie was renovated earlier this year. It reeks of stinky chemicals. Madewell smells of lingering secondhand smoke.

I’ve been eyeing the Little Tokyo Storyteller Scarf at Madewell. It is 100% wool, is in my favorite color scheme, and has polka dots. And the weather is getting cold. The store was littered with this scarf in the regular priced sections on the first and second floor for $59.50. Then, I saw a few of the scarves in the sale section… marked down to $39.99. I quickly compared the tag numbers between the two and they were the same — very weird. I ended up buying the scarf, after I returned the leopard sidewalk skimmers (ehh… don’t like calf hair!). Since they had 25% off running in the stores, I got the scarf for $30ish, final sale. Lesson: always check the stores.

I also liked the Parisienne Storyteller Scarf. It is slightly lighter than the Tokyo scarf since it is a wool/silk blend. I wish they put more effort in storytelling beyond slapping names of places on the scarf, though.

At J.Crew, the sale section was still decent. The lustre lace mockneck tee which I mentioned here, was marked down to $75 (post 25% off) and all of the sale items are not final sale. After trying it on at home, I concluded that this top is way too itchy for $75. It’s going back, but for those who are immune to itchiness, your lesson is the same as above.

This is the time of year when I start getting turned off by all the sales.

I tried on the leopard sidewalk skimmers from Madewell a while back, but returned them. I had a leopard hankering and re-ordered them again during the last regular price promotion. I still don’t know if I’m keeping them since these casual Keds Champion Laceless in Leopard are also particularly alluring (and you can get 20% off at Piperlime with code MERRYDAY through today) and I don’t know if I like calfhair footwear.

Regardless, Observation #1: the skimmers are significantly cheaper at Shopbop than Madewell at full price:

Not to say you should buy from either retailer, without considering the current promotions. Just sayin’.

Observation #2: There are a bunch of skimmers already on sale, and are pretty tempting with another 30% off. I ordered a few to try. I remember the leopard ones being true to size for me (I have wide feet), but some have said they run 1/2 size big.

As we are heading into 4Q, retailers are starting to lavish us with generous discounts. Many of these retailers have committed donations or a percentage of sales to organizations who are assisting in Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts.

My current favorites are:

1) J.Crew – 25% off $150+. Expires tonight (11:59pm EST). Code OURTREAT.

  • They restocked their sale section, all sale items are currently not final sale (returnable), and there are a ton of new arrivals. If you wear XS or XXS, check out the crewcuts section for size 12 or 14 tops. They are pretty cute and well priced.
  • The lustre lace mockneck tee is the spitting image of Stella McCartney’s Monaroa lace top from last year, which retailed for $1275. The J.Crew version runs slightly big, boxy (it flares out from the bust), and scratchy (it comes with a cami though). I think it looks more blush toned in real life. I’d gotten and returned the Monaroa top from Yoox a while back. It is much softer, but I couldn’t justify the $300 sale price.

2) Helmut Lang – 30% off through Sunday, November 11. Code HLFRIENDS. I love their tops and outerwear! They are owned by the same parent company as Theory, for the Theory lovers. While their items are a bit pricier, the style is dressy yet relaxed and comfortable.

3) Beauty.com – 20% off through Sunday, November 11 (11:59pm PST). They have some boutique brands that Sephora doesn’t carry (and Sephora’s current 20% off sale is only open to those who are friends with VIBs, I believe). It’s also great to get on their mailing list and receive targeted promotions.

4) Madewell – 25% off $150+ through Monday, November 12 (11:59PM EST). Code WOOHOO.

5) Land’s End Canvas – 30% off through Tuesday, November 13. Code: FAMILY. PIN: 1511.

6) Land’s End – 30% through Tuesday, November 13. Code: FRIENDS. PIN: 3010.

7) Gap – 30% through Monday, November 12. Code: GAPFRIENDS. They tend to end their promotions at midnight EST or even earlier. If you have a Silver card, check your inbox for the 40% off discount!

8) Shop Pretty Mommy – 25% off $100 through tonight, November 9. Code: HAPPY.

  • Baggu. I am loving gold right now, especially the gold leather bag.
  • Small Trades. Their striped tees are super comfy (which I checked out during their 50% off sale sale!). They run slightly small.
  • Forestbound. They recently had a sale on Fab, I think. They look sturdy and masculine, which I love… I do not need another bag!
  • Clare Vivier. My fave is the La Trop bag… especially in white.
  • Rachel Rose. These hand-painted silk tees are beautiful and often sold out everywhere. They were featured on Anthropologie before.

9) Neiman Marcus – Their current gift card event isn’t as great as last time’s, but it’s better than nothing! Spend $500, $1000, $1500, or $2000 and get 20% back in a gift card.

10) The Limited – 50% off three items through Sunday, November 11 with code 523. There are a bunch of great faux leather pieces here and I am curious about their ballet flats. At the same time, most of their items make me go “ick”.
